A New Class of Biomimetically Relevant "Scorpionate" Ligands. 1. The (2-Hydroxyphenyl)bis(pyrazolyl)methanes: Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Some Cobalt(II) Complexes
Inorganic Chemistry; 1997; 36(3); 291-297. (Article)
Experimental Section

All operations were carried out in air unless otherwise stated. THF was freshly distilled from sodium/benzophenone while diethyl ether was anhydrous 99.8% (Aldrich Chemical Co.) and used as received. Other solvents used were of reagent grade (Aldrich). Microanalyses were performed by Desert Analytics Laboratory, Tucson, AZ. 1H and 13C NMR spectra were obtained using an IBM Instruments 80 MHz FT-NMR. IR spectra were recorded in KBr disks on a Perkin-Elmer 1600 series FTIR. Solution electronic spectra were performed on a Hewlett-Packard 8452A diode array spectrophotometer under the computer control of a Compaq Deskpro 386S with OLIS model 4300 data system diode array spectrophotometry software (On-line Instruments Inc.).

Inorganic Chemistry; 1997; 36(3); 298-306. (Article)
Experimental Section

All operations were carried out in air and the solvents used were of reagent grade or better (Aldrich Chemical Co.). Microanalyses were performed by Desert Analytics Laboratory, Tucson, AZ. IR spectra were recorded in KBr disks on a Perkin-Elmer 1600 Series FTIR. Solution electronic spectra were obtained using a Hewlett-Packard 8452A diode array spectrophotometer under the computer control of a Compaq Deskpro 386S with OLIS Model 4300 data system diode array spectrophotometry software (On-line Instruments Inc.). Room-temperature magnetic moments were measured on a Johnson Matthey magnetic susceptibility balance while 1H NMR spectra were recorded on an IBM Instruments 80 MHz FT-NMR.

Oxomolybdenum(V)/Iron(III) Porphyrinate Complexes: Effect of Axial Ligand Plane Orientation on Complex Stability, Reduction Potential, and NMR and EPR Spectra
Inorganic Chemistry; 1997; 36(6); 1088-1094. (Article)
Experimental Section
Experiments were performed at 25 ēC (scan rate 100 mV/s). All half-wave potentials were referenced internally with respect to the ferrocenium/ferrocene couple and expressed with respect to the saturated calomel electrode (SCE) considering the Fc+/Fc couple to be +0.465 V vs SCE. Potentials were not corrected for the junction contribution. The nature of the couples (oxidation or reduction of the parent complex) was determined by measuring the rest potentials of the solutions. Electronic spectra were recorded in dichloromethane on a modified Cary 14 spectrophotometer with an OLIS interface and software. The cuvette compartment was attached to a circulating propylene glycol constant-temperature bath of 25.0 (±0.5) °C.

Spectroscopic Methods.
Reflectance spectra were collected against magnesium carbonate on an Olis modified Cary-14 equipped with a collecting sphere. A MgCO3 versus MgCO3 background was subtracted from the collected spectra to allow for differences in the optical path. The spectra were processed using the Kubelka-Monk technique. This was not effective for complexes which undergo room temperature emission since there is no monochromator between the sample and the photodetector to differentiate between reflected and emitted light.

Experimental Section
Experimental electronic absorption spectra were taken at 25 ± 1 °C by using a OLIS 4300 Cary-14 system on solutions prepared in acetonitrile. For wavelengths between 405 and 900 nm, approximately 2-4 mM solutions and 1 cm pathlengths were used. This would allow the detection of weak transitions (A > 0.01) in the visible and near-IR regions with ε > 2.5-5.0 M-1 cm-1. For the UV region (405-205 nm) of the spectra, 20-40 µM solutions in 1 cm pathlength cells were used.
