The phase relationship between PSC and BSC in the PE983 produces the sequence of signals shown:

This data collection format causes temporal separation between acquisition of sample and reference signals.

This sequence results in minimal temporal dispersion between sample and reference signals. Now the signals are R2, S1, DR, and S2, R1, DS—that is, the sample and reference signals—are as close together in time as possible, minimizing the effects of a change in the detector's output. Only the order of the six numbers is altered. The calculation (and thus the answer) is the same, but with a reduced potential for error.
